EPA Announces Brownfields Grants Awarded for 2007
Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Commission - The $200,000 Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to clean up the 43-acre Sandy Ridge Orchard site located at Edgewood School and Ridge Roads in Shenandoah Junction. The site was an apple orchard for more than 50 years and is contaminated with arsenic and pesticides.
Monongalia County - The $200,000 Cleanup Grant will be used to clean up the 3.1-acre Quality Glass Plant site in the Town of Van Voorhis. The site was used for glass manufacturing from the 1920s to the late 1980s. Site soil and groundwater are contaminated with heavy metals. Grant funds also will be used to implement engineering and institutional controls and support community outreach activities.
Nitro - EPA has selected the City of Nitro for two brownfields assessment grants for a total of $400,000. Hazardous substances grant funds will be used to conduct community outreach and inventory brownfields sites. Funds also will be used to conduct up to eight Phase I and up to three Phase II environmental site assessments. Petroleum grant funds will be used to perform the same tasks at sites with potential petroleum contamination.
